When did you join the CCI?
Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. joined the CCI in May 2013.
Why did your company/organization join the CCI?
We looked at the CCI as an important vehicle and platform to speak about the importance of this region and its effect on our larger global footprint. It was also a great opportunity to highlight existing partners such as The Nature Conservancy and announce an exciting new partnership with NRG Energy which focuses on our efforts to drive renewable energy to all of our applicable hotels and resorts.
How is the CCI important to marine and coastal conservation in the Caribbean?
The CCI highlights the importance of marine and coastal conservation by bringing together corporations, NGOs and governments to align priorities, set goals, forge partnerships and most importantly, put a focus on this important ecosystem and its relevance to the larger climate change conversation.
What are your company's main conservation priority actions under the CCI?
As part of our commitment to conservation and sustainability, in 2009 we published our Environmental Sustainability Policy and launched 30/20 by 20, a set of system wide energy and water reduction goals. Our plan is to reduce our energy and water consumption by 30% and 20% respectively per built hotel room by 2020. Furthermore, at the end of 2013, we announced an additional goal to reduce our GHG emissions by 30% per built hotel room by 2020.
At the CCI, our main priority action stemmed from our commitment to partner with NRG which will not only help us achieve our emissions goal but highlights the significance of ecosystem protection and conservation. The partnership begins with solar installations at three owned properties totaling almost 2.2MW, including the Westin St. John.
Why is conservation important to your company/organization? How does conservation benefit you?
The Caribbean region is of vital importance to our Company being home to 11 hotels and resorts in the area across several of our brands. It also exemplifies the issues and challenges that affect many hundreds of our properties in coastal and island locations around the world. Our guests and customers come to our hotels and resorts to experience the environment and communities in which we operate; therefore, it is imperative for to us to work alongside our properties and partners to help protect it for the long term.
We think this work truly aligns with Starwood's strategy and focus and it will not only help preserve our fragile eco–treasures; but will help build a better world to experience for future generations.
